Chapter Twelve

‘How much did we make?’ asked Grace, placing three glasses of cold juice in front of the boys.

They were kneeling on the floor with the money spread out on the table in front of them in piles.

Grace knew there had been forty punnets of fruit and they’d sold them all, but she let the boys count the money.

‘Thirty-eight pounds!’ exclaimed Freddie, ‘But really forty because we gave two away. Does that mean we can buy an ice cream?’

‘It certainly does,’ replied Grace, ‘with a double flake, sprinkles and chocolate sauce!’ She couldn’t quite believe they’d managed to sell the lot. After giving the boys enough for their ice creams, she scooped up the rest of the change.

‘What are you doing?’ asked Joey, watching Grace separate the money and place it in different columns on the white cardboard budget card.

‘This is the money we have to live on. Things aren’t free and we need to be careful that we don’t waste a single penny. Come and have a look.’

All three boys climbed on the stool next to her.

‘Food, electricity, water, et cetera. Every penny is spoken for. So if we make any extra, that can be for treats.’

‘It looks very complicated being an adult,’ observed Freddie.

‘And boring!’ added Joey.

‘It is but it can also be very rewarding, especially when we work hard as a team. Now, have you all got your swimming costumes and a towel?’

The boys nodded enthusiastically as Grace locked the door behind them and they headed towards the far meadow. Grace had no clue what Andrew had in store for them. She wasn’t aware of any water on that side of the Castle grounds, so she had no idea why they needed to bring their swimming costumes. The boys ran ahead while Grace carried their towels slung across her arm. As soon as they reached the meadow, the twins let out an enormous ‘WOAH!’

The five-seat Cessna was parked on the landing strip. The white plane looked grand with its racing-red stripes along the side and Andrew’s logo on the tail.

‘He’s got his own plane.’ Freddie clutched Joey’s arm as they began to pogo up and down excitedly. ‘Are we really going up in a plane?’

Grace had no idea what Andrew had planned. ‘It looks like you are about to find out.’ Andrew stepped from behind the plane holding three pilot caps.

‘Calling Captain Freddie, Captain Joey and Captain Billy,’ announced Andrew with a grin.

The twins ran straight towards him and immediately claimed their caps. Billy looked towards Grace. ‘Go on, Captain Billy.’ She saluted him. ‘Go and get your cap.’

Billy ran towards Andrew, who placed the cap on Billy’s head. He turned round towards Grace with a huge beam on his face.

‘Well, I never expected this,’ remarked Grace, catching the boys up. She looked at the plane rather than at Andrew.

‘Is this your plane?’ asked Freddie, looking up at the logo on the tail.

‘It is,’ replied Andrew.

‘And are you taking us on a trip?’ asked Joey.

‘I am if that’s okay with your mum.
